My Ph.d research project is about the physical environment of children and specifically the relations between children and their environment. My own experience of children and their work is my own three children and the time I had created an English/French language club for children from 3 years. In that I came in contact with the expressive language of children.
My project rests on the assumption that the built environment of pre-school contexts has a significant role to play in developing a sense of identity and thus a sense of belonging and security in children.
The core of the project is an attempt to isolate and identify such design elements as contribute to creating the sense of place necessary for a childs well-being. different school environments and how functional they appear to be, and of the reactions and responses of the primary and secondary users of these environments.
The experience as mother of three observing the school environment in different countries in the past 15 years, has focused my interest on how to analyse the relation between childrens well-being and their school environment. I want to explore this problem through a close investigation of what such concepts as space, time, place, form, function and structure mean to children in various cultural environments and how the phenomena which these concepts express merge into one perspective and create a sense of place.
